How To Recite Your Evening Prayer

How To Recite Your Evening Prayer Axel Vaux Verdi Blog

EVENING PRAYER: In this article we will explain how to recite your evening prayer. It is important to note that the evening prayer should be considered as CONSCIOUSNESS’ or HEART’s EXAMINATION. Here’s how to practice it:

Let’s put ourselves into God’s presence and worship Him

I adore You, O my God, with the submission inspired by the presence of Your sovereign greatness. I believe in You, because You are the truth itself. I hope in You, because you are infinitely good. I love You with all my heart, because You are supremely kind; and I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You.

Let us thank God for the graces he has given us

What thanksgiving will I give You, O my God, for all the benefits I have received from You? You think of me from eternity; You have drawn me from nothing, You have given Your life to redeem me, and You still fill me with infinite favors every day. Unfortunately! Lord, what can I do in recognition of so much goodness? Join me, blessed spirits, to praise the God of mercy, who never ceases to do good to the most unworthy and thankless of His creatures.

Let’s ask God to know our sins

Eternal source of light, Holy Spirit, dispel the darkness that hides the ugliness and malice of sin. Have me conceive of it so horrifyingly, O God, that I hate it, if You can, as much as You hate it yourself, and fear nothing so much as to commit it in the future .

GENERAL EXAMINATION

Let us examine our conscience on the sins committed during this day, towards God, towards the neighbor and towards ourselves … in thoughts … in words … in actions … in omissions …

SPECIAL EXAMINATION

Note the shortcomings.

Ask God’s forgiveness for our sins

Here I am, Lord, all covered with confusion, and pierced with grief at the sight of my faults. I come to hate them before You, with a real displeasure for having offended a God so good, so kind, and so worthy of being loved. Was it then, oh my God, what should You expect from my gratitude, after having loved me to shed Your blood for me? Yes, Lord, I have pushed my ingratitude too far. I beg You very humbly for forgiveness, and I beseech you, O my God, by the same goodness of which I have felt so many times the effects, to grant me the grace to make of it, from today, and up to to death, a sincere penance.

Let us take a firm resolution not to sin

That I wish, O my God, never having offended You! But, since I have been unfortunate enough to displease You, I am going to show You my repentance, by a better conduct than that which I have hitherto kept. I renounce now to sin and to the occasion of sin, especially where I have the weakness to fall back more often. And if You deign to grant me Your grace, as I ask and hope, I will try to fulfill my duties faithfully, and nothing will be able to stop me when it comes to serving You. Amen.

Now recite the following prayers:

Our Father: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary:Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

I Believe in God (Nicene Creed): I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I confess to God: I confess to Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael, the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints and to you, Father, that I have sinned exceedingly, in thought, word and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary, ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and you, Father, to pray to the Lord Our God for me.

Let us recommend to God, to the Blessed Virgin and to the Saints

Bless, O my God, the rest that I will take, to repair my strength, to serve You better. Holy Virgin, Mother of my God, and after Him my firmest hope, Saint Joseph, my good Angel, my holy Patron, intercede for me, protect me during this night, all the time of my life and at the hour of my death. Amen.

Pray for the living and for the departed faithful.

Spread, Lord, Your blessings on my parents, my benefactors, my friends and my enemies. Protect all those You have given me for superiors, both spiritual and temporal. Help the poor, the prisoners, the afflicted, the travelers, the sick and the dying. Convert the heretics, and enlighten the infidels. God of goodness and mercy, have pity on the souls of the faithful who are in Purgatory, especially those for whom I am obliged to pray. Give them rest and eternal light. Amen.

Prayer to all saints

Blessed souls, who have had the happiness of achieving glory, get me two things from Him who is Our God and Our Father: let me never offend Him mortally, and take away from me all that He displeases. Amen.
